Understanding Not Holding Temperature
Temperature instability usually points to limescale insulating the heating element or a drifting NTC sensor. Scale makes the heater overwork, causing temperature swings that ruin espresso extraction. A faulty sensor can also make the machine heat intermittently.
Universal Troubleshooting Steps
These steps work across all major brands:
- Run a full descaling cycle with an approved descalant.
- Measure the temperature at the group head; swings above 5°C indicate a problem.
- Test the NTC temperature sensor with a multimeter against the manual's spec.
- If the element cycles on and off erratically, replace the thermostat or contact service.
